Northern Morocco Heritage Tour with Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick
An Unforgettable Journey Through the Gateway of Andalus

At Halal Getaways, we believe that travel should transform, inspire, and reconnect us to the incredible legacy of our past. Now, we are honoured to announce one of our most special journeys yet — the Northern Morocco Heritage Tour, accompanied by none other than Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick — one of the foremost scholars of Islamic history, heritage, and civilization in our time.

This is more than a tour. It is a living classroom, a spiritual revival, and a rare privilege to walk in the footsteps of the early pioneers of Islam in the West. Northern Morocco was the stepping stone to Al-Andalus — a bridge between the Maghrib and Europe that saw the birth of one of the greatest chapters in Islamic civilization.

Our journey will begin in the ancient port city of Tangiers, the legendary meeting place of Africa and Europe, where the likes of Musa ibn Nusayr and Tariq ibn Ziyad set the stage for the Umayyad expansion into Iberia. We will then soak in the breathtaking beauty of Chefchaouen, the ‘Blue Pearl’ nestled high in the Rif mountains — a city infused with Andalusian spirit and resistance.

The tour continues to Fes, the heart of Moroccan scholarship and spirituality — home to the oldest university in the world, Al-Qarawiyyin, founded by a Muslim woman, Fatima al-Fihriyyah. Here, we’ll explore how Morocco became a cradle for Islamic knowledge, art, and architecture that would light up the world.

We’ll then journey to Rabat, Morocco’s imperial capital, rich with ancient fortresses and timeless Islamic monuments, before concluding in the dynamic city of Casablanca, a modern echo of Morocco’s glorious heritage.

For those who wish to extend their journey, an optional add-on to the vibrant and majestic city of Marrakech is available — a place that has captured the hearts of travelers and scholars for centuries.

Throughout this journey, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will bring the history alive — sharing priceless insights, forgotten stories, and deep reflections, helping us connect the dots between the past and our lives today. To travel with a scholar of his calibre is a rare blessing and a powerful opportunity to reignite our sense of identity, pride, and purpose.

This is not just sightseeing.
This is seeking knowledge.
This is reviving a legacy.
This is travel with meaning.

Are you ready to walk the path of giants?

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tangier – Gateway to Africa

Bismillah — your journey begins.
Today, you arrive in the legendary city of Tangiers, perched at the crossroads of two continents and two mighty seas. Known for centuries as the meeting point of Europe and Africa, Tangiers has witnessed the passing of civilizations, scholars, and travelers — a city alive with history, mystery, and inspiration.

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take some time to relax, refresh, and settle in. Feel the anticipation build as you prepare to step into the pages of Islamic history.

In the evening, we will gather for a group orientation and welcome briefing — an opportunity to meet your fellow travelers, share intentions, and set the tone for this unique journey. Here, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will offer a special introduction and outline of the journey ahead, providing historical context, spiritual reflections, and preparing our hearts and minds to extract the deeper lessons from every site we visit.

Following the briefing, we’ll embark on a Panoramic Tour of Tangier to catch the city’s timeless spirit.

Highlights include:

  • Cap Spartel – Stand where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, a powerful natural symbol of connection, change, and exploration. Reflect on how this coastline once launched fleets and footsoldiers into the destiny of Al-Andalus.

  • Free Time for Exploration – Dive into the ancient Medina and Kasbah, a labyrinth of narrow alleys, bustling souks, and hidden gems. Every corner whispers stories of merchants, travelers, and mystics who shaped the world.

Enjoy leisure time along the corniche — Tangier’s scenic seafront promenade — or relax at a local café, soaking in the atmosphere while sipping mint tea and watching the waves roll in.

Overnight in Tangiers, recharging for the extraordinary days ahead.

The journey has begun. May it be a means of barakah, knowledge, and transformation.

Day 2Day 2: Tangiers → Chefchaouen – The Hidden Gem of the Rif Mountains

After breakfast, we depart Tangiers and journey inland toward the breathtaking town of Chefchaouen — known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco. Nestled high in the Rif Mountains, this enchanting city was founded by Muslim refugees fleeing the fall of Al-Andalus. Every winding alley, every blue-washed wall, carries the echoes of Andalusian spirit, resilience, and beauty.

As we drive through the rugged landscapes, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will share the rich history of how northern Morocco became a sanctuary for Andalusian Muslims, preserving their traditions, crafts, and knowledge amidst the mountains.

Upon arrival in Chefchaouen, be prepared to be mesmerized:

  • Wander through the city’s narrow blue alleys, where every step feels like walking through a living canvas.

  • Explore the charming Medina, filled with local artisans, handwoven textiles, and intricate Andalusian architecture.

  • Take in the peaceful atmosphere, reflecting on the resilience of those who carried the light of Islamic knowledge even through times of exile and hardship.

Optional activities include:

  • Visit the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen, with its distinctive octagonal minaret.

  • Relax at Ras El Ma, the natural spring where the locals still come to wash clothes and fill water, set against lush greenery and flowing streams.

After a day of discovery, enjoy free time to soak in the serenity — perhaps find a rooftop café overlooking the sunset-drenched mountains and Medina, sipping Moroccan mint tea as the adhan softly echoes across the hills.

Overnight in Chefchaouen, a night wrapped in peace and reflection.

Reflection Prompt:
What lessons can we draw from a community that, though displaced, preserved its identity, faith, and beauty for centuries? How can we embody that same spirit of resilience today?

Day 3Chefchaouen → Fes – Entering the Heart of Knowledge

After breakfast amidst the cool mountain air, we bid farewell to the magical alleys of Chefchaouen and set out toward Fes— the beating heart of Islamic scholarship, spirituality, and civilization in Morocco.

As we travel, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will continue weaving together the story of Morocco’s role in the golden chain of Islamic history — a land that absorbed the treasures of Andalusia and, through its scholars and institutions, preserved and expanded the legacy of ilm (knowledge) for the world.

Arrival in Fes: The Timeless City

Upon arrival, you’ll immediately feel the shift — Fes is not just a city; it is a living time capsule.
Home to countless madrasahs, mosques, and scholarly circles, Fes was — and still is — one of the greatest centers of Islamic learning.

Highlights of the day include:

  • Orientation Walking Tour of Fes el-Bali – Step into the UNESCO World Heritage listed Fes el-Bali, one of the largest and oldest medieval cities in the world. A mesmerizing maze of over 9,000 narrow streets, vibrant souks, and ancient minarets.

  • Visit to Al-Qarawiyyin University – Founded by Fatima al-Fihriyyah in 859 CE, it is recognized by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in the world. Reflect on the incredible contribution of Muslim women in preserving and nurturing sacred knowledge.

Along the way, admire the ancient madrasahs, artisan quarters, and historic mosques — each stone bearing silent witness to centuries of devotion, struggle, and brilliance.

Evening Reflections:

After a day immersed in this extraordinary atmosphere, we regroup for an evening talk by Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, where he will delve into:

  • The importance of sacred knowledge in Islamic civilization.

  • The legacy of the scholars of Fes and their impact on both the Islamic and Western worlds.

  • Lessons we must reclaim today as seekers of knowledge.

Overnight in Fes, where the spirit of ilm still lingers in the air.

Reflection Prompt:
Fatima al-Fihriyyah dedicated her entire wealth to building a university that would serve generations after her. What legacy are we preparing for the generations that follow us? How can we contribute to the revival of Islamic knowledge today?

Day 4Full Immersion in Fes – The Jewel of Islamic Civilization

“Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?”
(Qur’an 39:9)

Today is dedicated to fully immersing ourselves in the rich spiritual, intellectual, and artistic legacy of Fes — a city that once stood at the crossroads of the Muslim world, linking Africa, Andalus, and beyond.

Guided Tour of Fes – Stepping into the Past

Together with our expert local guides and the insights of Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, we will delve deep into the treasures of Fes:

  • Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University – Explore more intimately the grounds of this historic institution where scholars, philosophers, mathematicians, and theologians once gathered.

  • Medersa Bou Inania – One of the most beautiful madrasahs in Morocco, famed for its intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar wood, and monumental architecture — a living symbol of devotion to knowledge and beauty.

  • Chouara Tannery – Witness one of the oldest tanneries in the world, still operating as it did centuries ago. A testament to the skills and craftsmanship passed down through Muslim civilizations.

  • The Mausoleum of Moulay Idris II – Visit the resting place of the founder of Fes, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and a unifier of the Moroccan people under the banner of Islam.

Throughout the day, reflect on:

  • How the Islamic ethos of excellence (ihsan) permeated every field — from education to architecture to trade.

  • The communal spirit that prioritized knowledge, charity, and dignity as core pillars of Muslim life.

Leisure Time in the Medina:

Later in the afternoon, enjoy some leisure time to explore Fes at your own pace:

  • Stroll through the bustling souks.

  • Seek out unique Moroccan handicrafts and traditional wares.

  • Find a quiet rooftop café and let the sights and sounds of Fes etch themselves into your heart.

Evening Reflection with Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick:

We will conclude the day with an inspiring session exploring:

  • The decline and revival of Islamic scholarship.

  • How Fes stands as a mirror for the rise and fall of civilizations — and the role we each have to play in the present ummah.

Overnight in Fes, sleeping under the same stars that once witnessed the golden age of Islamic knowledge.

Reflection Prompt:
In a world drowning in information but starved for wisdom, how can we nurture true ilm (knowledge) — knowledge that transforms hearts and societies?

Day 6Fes → Moulay Idris → Meknes → Rabat – Tracing the Legacy of the Founders

“And We made them leaders guiding by Our command.”
(Qur’an 21:73)

Today, we continue our journey through Morocco’s sacred and imperial past, visiting sites that echo with the footsteps of saints, scholars, and visionary leaders.

Departing Fes, we head first toward the spiritually significant town of Moulay Idris.

Stop 1: Moulay Idris Zerhoun – The Cradle of Moroccan Islam

Set atop two green hills, the town of Moulay Idris is named after Moulay Idris I, the great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the man who established the first Islamic dynasty in Morocco. It was from here that Islam spread across the land, setting the foundations for centuries of faith, unity, and culture.

  • Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Idris I (exterior only for non-Muslims) — a deeply revered site where Moroccans continue to honor one of the key founders of their Islamic identity.

  • Reflect on how the early seeds of Islam were planted here, with sincerity, struggle, and sacrifice.

Short Free Time:
Stroll through the peaceful whitewashed streets, soaking in the serene, timeless atmosphere of this holy town.

Stop 2: Meknes – The Imperial City of Might and Majesty

From Moulay Idris, we travel a short distance to Meknes — once the glorious imperial capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, often called “The Warrior Sultan.”

Highlights in Meknes include:

  • Bab Mansour Gate – Admire one of the most magnificent gates in North Africa, a masterpiece of Islamic art, inscribed with Quranic verses and dazzling geometric patterns.

  • The Royal Granaries and Stables – Explore the colossal structures built to house tens of thousands of horses, symbolizing Morocco’s power, organization, and architectural brilliance.

  • The Old Medina and Souks – Wander through the vibrant markets and quieter medina streets where time seems to stand still.

Lunch Break in Meknes — Enjoy a delicious Moroccan meal before continuing the journey.

Arrival in Rabat – The Political and Spiritual Capital

In the late afternoon, we arrive in Rabat, the modern capital of Morocco, yet a city deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and history.

Upon arrival:

  • Short Orientation Tour – Get an introduction to Rabat’s key sites including the famous Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where modern Moroccan history intertwines with centuries of Islamic legacy.

  • A chance to reflect on how Morocco has evolved while holding firmly to its Islamic heritage.

Evening at Leisure:
Relax at the hotel or enjoy a stroll along the serene Bou Regreg riverfront, where ancient walls meet modern skyline.

Overnight in Rabat, where past and present live side by side.

Reflection Prompt:
What lessons can we draw from the visionary leadership of figures like Moulay Idris and Sultan Moulay Ismail? How can we as individuals leave a legacy that uplifts the ummah today and tomorrow?

Day 6Rabat → Casablanca – The Legacy Continues

“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.”
(Qur’an 19:96)

This morning, after breakfast, we depart Rabat for the vibrant coastal city of Casablanca — Morocco’s largest and most modern metropolis, yet still a city where faith and heritage run deep.

En route, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will continue to guide us through the narrative of Morocco’s place in the broader Islamic world — connecting the dots from early Islamic expansion to the present day.

Highlights in Casablanca:

  • Hassan II Mosque
One of the largest mosques in the world, and truly a breathtaking masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture. Built partly over the ocean, with intricate marble work, stunning mosaics, and a roof that opens to the sky, it stands as a living testimony that Islam continues to inspire beauty and excellence into the modern age.

    • Private Guided Tour inside (subject to prayer times and schedule).

    • Reflect on the deep symbolism: the ocean (Allah’s vast mercy), the open sky (the limitless horizon of the ummah), and the firm foundation (our deen).

  • Corniche Seafront Promenade
Enjoy leisure time walking along the Atlantic coastline, where traditional Moroccan culture blends with cosmopolitan energy. A moment to relax, reflect, and enjoy the blessings of the journey.

  • Visit the Old Medina (optional)
For those who wish, a stroll through the old medina of Casablanca offers one last glimpse into Morocco’s timeless soul.

Evening Reflections:

Tonight, we gather one last time as a group for a closing circle and reflection session with Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick:

  • Sharing key lessons and personal transformations from the journey.

  • Reviving the prophetic tradition of reflecting upon travel as a mirror for life’s greater journey toward Allah.

Overnight in Casablanca, with hearts full and spirits uplifted.

Reflection Prompt:
The Hassan II Mosque stands firm between the land and sea, between tradition and modernity. How can we, too, be pillars of faith — grounded in tradition but open to the horizon of new possibilities for the ummah?

🌙 Suggested Evening Du’a (Group or Personal)
